An Abundance Jar for Hellenic Polytheists

This week (5th January 2026), Venus connects with the Sun, Mars, and Jupiter, making it a perfect time to start an abundance jar for the year! This Abundance jar is inspired by both my Hellenic Polytheistic and Witchcraft praxis. For this reason, the Abundance Jar is not historically accurate, and some of the herbal symbolism may differ from what you commonly expect to see in an Abundance Jar. Feel free to use it if it speaks to you!

Cornucopia - the Hellenic Polytheist symbol of abundance

The Blessings of Good Government by Conca, Sebastiano (Italian painter, 1680-1764)

In Ancient Greece, the cornucopia was a corn-shaped vessel without a lid, filled with offerings of fruits, grains, and flowers for the Theoi. It was a symbol of fertility and prosperity and was used in many agricultural festivals. It was also used as a symbol of wealth and success for merchants and traders, so this would often appear on marketplaces and trade agreements.

The cornucopia features in a lot of artwork over the decades, but it also appears on ancient Greek pottery and frescoes alongside the Theoi, so like the artists, I like to paint/draw a cornucopia onto my Abundance Jar. Think of it as a nod to the traditional symbol of abundance.

Making the Abundance Jar

For maximum effect, make your jar between 5th-11th January 2026. You can reactivate its energies throughout the year by giving it a shake every month.

My Hellenic Polytheist Abundance Jar with rice instead of barley. (They didn't have any in the shops this week. Rice is often used for abundance jars.)

You will need (and why):

  • Barley (symbolises abundance, fertility, and renewal).

  • Dried rose petals (symbolise Aphrodite and love).

  • Dried poppy seeds or petals (symbolise Aphrodite and love).

  • Ivy (symbolises Dionysus, immortality as well as long-lasting passions rather than the fleeting ones of vines).

  • Dried cloves (symbolise fertility and abundance)

  • Coins (to manifest good monetary fortune)

  • Green beeswax candle (Bees symbolise knowledge, health, and power. The colour green is associated with nature and life).

  • A glass jar with a lid.

  • Glass paint or acrylic pens (to draw on your jar).

  • 1 pen.

  • Paper.

  • Jasmine incense (Optional. symbolises abundance and wealth).

I have excluded the commonly used Cinnamon stick because, in Ancient Greece and Rome, cinnamon was burned at funerals to purify the air and help the souls pass peacefully, which, for me, does not align with the intention of an abundance jar. I have also excluded bay leaves as they symbolise art and intelligence rather than prosperity.

How to make your jar:

  1. Paint/draw the conrupoia on your jar. (follow the instructions, you may need to leave your jar for a few days to dry, which is why I have placed this step first.)

  2. Cleanse your space and get yourself in the mindset for magickal working (whatever you usually do within your praxis).

  3. Think about what you would like to have in abundance this year. Write this down on a bit of paper. You might want to write this as a sigil for some extra oomph!

  4. Pour barley into the base of the jar, filling it approximately 1/3 of the way.

  5. Put your piece of paper inside the jar.

  6. Now add your dried rose petals, dried poppy seeds/petals, ivy, dried cloves, and coins.

  7. Light your incense stick/cone and carefully add some of its smoke to your jar in a clockwise motion (deosil). Then place on the lid.

  8. Holding your candle, think again about the abundance you wish to manifest this year, and light your candle. You will want the green wax to melt and drip onto the top of your jar, eventually sealing the whole thing. This will take some time, but I feel this is safer than trying to put a candle on top of the jar and lighting it. Practice good fire safety (let’s try to be as safe as possible when working with the powerful element of fire!)

  9. Your Abundance Jar is now complete. You can leave this on your altar for the rest of the year.
