Full Moon Love Ceremony

You will need

  • Dried rosemary or bay (for khernips).

  • Bowl of water (for khernips).

  • Something to cleanse your altar space (can be barley, salt sprinkled khernips water, whatever you like to do for your praxis).

  • A candle.

  • Saffron.

  • Libation jug with contents (water, wine, honey, or milk).

  • Vessel to pour your libations into.

  • Frankincense and Myrrh resin or incense.

  • Charcoal disc (if not using incense sticks/cones).

  • Rose water in a spray bottle.

  • Dried Cinnamon powder.

  • A mirror.

The ceremony

  • Prepare khernips.

  • Use khernips.

  • Cleanse your altar space.

  • Light a candle/your altar’s fire and add saffron to its flame.

  • First Libation to Hestia.

  • Libation to Aphrodite and recite Homeric Hymn 6 to Aphrodite:

    • “I will sing of stately Aphrodite, gold-crowned and beautiful, whose dominion is the walled cities of all sea-set Kypros (Cyprus). There, the moist breath of Zephyro,s the western wind, wafted her over the waves of the loud-moaning sea in soft foam, and there the gold-filleted Horai (Horae, Seasons) welcomed her joyously.”

From Theoi.com

  • Ask Aphrodite to come and assist you with self-love. Offer frankincense and myrrh by burning it on a charcoal disc or lighting incense.

  • Spray the rose water through your hair, on your body and in the air. This is to attract beauty and love into your life and around you.

  • Throw cinnamon powder on yourself and around you so that the scent of Aphrodite is in the air: (Apuleius, The Golden Ass 2. 8 ff):
“Venus [Aphrodite] . . . wearing that belt of hers around her waist, diffusing the scent of cinnamon and bedewing the air with balsam.”

  • Look at yourself in the mirror with love and passion. You want to look at yourself deeply, as if it were a romantic partner. Then declare: “I love you!”

  • Last Libation to Hestia.

  • Thank the Theoi for assisting you with your love ceremony.

Every morning until the New Moon, as you get ready, spray rose water through your hair, on your body, and into the air. Throw cinnamon powder on yourself and around you to invoke Aphrodite’s help, and look into the mirror with love and declare, “I love you”.
