What Sculpting Means to Me

Sculptures have to be built up, pushed against, and I can only fully trust their voice once it has its own weight. Using forces, I drag the artwork into tangible existence; it puts the work back into real space with its mass and gravity, making it unavoidable for the audience.

Fault Line (2022)

Fault Line is a sculpture I created that began as a single sheet of steel, cut and rolled back in on itself to almost rejoin, but imperfectly. Rust blooms unevenly across the surface, marking time the way weather marks a landscape, so the material itself becomes a record of what it has been through before arriving here.

I was drawn to steel for this artwork because it is hard yet still bends, holding memory of every fold, every cut, embossing, and every point of contact. In reworking a single flat form into a three-dimensional sculpture, I wanted to ask what happens in the moment something is bent but not broken: not loss, just possibility. The gap between the two halves is not space but a threshold, the place where a new shape becomes visible inside the old one.

This is a piece about what remains usable in what looks finished. A restart is rarely a clean beginning; it carries its prior form with it, visible in every seam and stain. The sculpture doesn't disguise its history and constantly undergoes new beginnings each time it is recleaned and polished for display.
